Insemination

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) & Intracervical Insemination (ICI)

  • Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) and Intracervivcal Insemination (ICI) are two methods of getting sperm into the body with the hopes of achieving pregnancy.

Before moving forward with insemination you must do an initial visit (this is where we’ll talk in much more detail about the options). Your initial visit can happen in the form of a one-time comprehensive Fertility Deep Dive or with our Fertility Season Package.

  • We operate from an assumption of fertility. We believe that most people who are empowered in their family choice, informed about their body’s fertility, and are planning well-timed inseminations will become pregnant within 6-12 months. We believe the medical model of fertility, which often comes from an assumption of infertility, does not meet the needs of many individuals. Whether you are queer, a solo parent by choice, have been labeled “elderly gravida,” or have an otherwise non-traditional family that does not fit neatly into a societal box, we see you as an empowered being, already fertile and ready to create a family.

Coyote Midwifery operates from an assumption of fertility model. Through this journey, we may identify reasons for more in-depth medical investigation and support than Coyote can provide. Although this is rare, we are dedicated to your fertility journey and may offer other resources to better suit your needs.

  • Whether you choose intrauterine insemination (IUI) or intracervical insemination (ICI), these simple procedures can be provided at our clinic or in the comfort and privacy of your home.

We provide time for a detailed explanation of everything before it happens and ask that you let us know how we can make you feel safe and comfortable. You are always in charge!

After placing washed sperm into your uterus (IUI) or fresh sperm near the cervix (ICI), we will leave you to quietly set an intention before you jump back into the activities of the day.

We generally recommend doing two inseminations per cycle in order to increase the likelihood of success.

  • Understanding bodies and fertility in the context of our busy lives is a dynamic process. This is why it can be important to touch base along the way to make sure we are doing everything we can to support you in building your family. We offer ala carte follow-up visits with 15-minute, 30-minute, and 60-minute options and/or packages that include unlimited monthly messaging.

FAQs

  • First, we see you. As providers (and as humans) we strive to practice trauma-informed care. Trauma-informed care recognizes that people often have many different types of trauma in their lives, and these traumas have an impact on physical, emotional, and mental health.

With Coyote, you are in control of your body and your story. If you have experienced trauma, it is entirely up to you whether you discuss it with us. Trauma affects everyone differently—particularly as it relates to your body—and the necessity to respond and process will be individual to you.

Our fertility care is a partnership between you, your chosen family, and your Coyote midwives, and you are in charge every step of the way. We want to make sure that you feel physically and emotionally safe. When it comes time for your insemination, you'll direct. We will hold space for you to let us know how we can help make the experience feel empowering and magical.

  • Great question! Ovulation is a little unpredictable. We offer insemination services seven days a week and want to make sure we are ready when you call. In order to ensure our availability, we charge an on-call fee that covers your estimated ovulation window. This fee is non-refundable and must be paid at the start of each cycle. Detailed instructions for booking this window are included in your Welcome program.

  • First, if you are working with a sperm bank, don’t worry; this will be done ahead of time.

If you are working with a known donor and are hoping to do IUI, you will need to make arrangements for sperm washing.

In order to utilize fresh sperm in the IUI process, it must first be washed. This sterile procedure removes the sperm from the semen, leaving a small vial of fluid that can easily be deposited inside the uterus. Your known donor(s), intended co-parent(s), or partner(s) provides a specimen at our clinic and then is free to leave while we process the sample. Insemination occurs immediately after (please note that we are unable to store sperm for later use).

This procedure takes approximately 60 minutes and is only available in our Ashland clinic.
